Dallas Police Chief Returns To Work Amid Summer Crime Spike

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Dallas’ police chief is set to return to work Monday.

Chief Rene Hall has been on medical leave since the middle of July, though neither Hall nor the city has said exactly why. On Monday, she will return to her post, which in the interim has been occupied by Assistant Chief David Pughes.

“To ensure the success of her return while she continues to recover, I have encouraged the chief to be limited in her external activities and public appearances for the next few weeks,” city manager TC Broadnax said in a statement. “She will use this time to re-acclimate to the many projects and initiatives currently underway in the department.”

Her return comes during a violent summer in Dallas, where so far crime is up 25 percent compared to this time last year.

According to the department, there were 139 homicides in Dallas between the start of the year and July 31st. Last year, there were 103 in that time span.

In a statement, Hall said she’s thankful to the city for being patient while she was on medical leave.

“I am excited and look forward to returning to work and resuming normal activity,” Hall said.
