DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The President of the Dallas Police Association told WBAP/KLIF Thursday that he did nothing wrong in the minutes following the murder of Botham Jean, amid calls for him to resign.
Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was sentenced 10 years in prison this week in Jean’s murder.
During Guyger’s trial testimony revealed Mike Mata instructed Officers to turn off the patrol car camera when Guyger was sitting inside the car. He claims he did it to protect attorney client privilege, thinking Guyger would speak with her attorney’s by phone.
“I knew that our attorney’s would be calling Amber because I gave them her number and they would be having that conversation in that car,” Mata said. “That is attorney-client information which is protected by the constitution.”
According to Mata, it’s standard protocol, and was only brought up by the prosecution to present an image of a corrupt Police Department.
“That just further enrages a jury,” Mata said.
Activists are now calling for Mata’s resignation, claiming he gave Guyger special treatment.
“When you’re Police Officers are wrong you are supposed to protect your community,” said a Dallas woman protesting Guyger’s sentence. “We must expose that Mikle Mata needs to go. He is a failure as a leader.”
DPD is calling for an internal investigation.
