AUSTIN  (WBAP/KLIF News) – A new report from Georgetown University shows Texas has the highest number of uninsured children in the country and the trend shows no signs of stopping.

Research from the university’s Health Policy Institute shows the number of uninsured children increased nationally by more than 400,000 between 2016 and 2018 and about a quarter of them are in Texas.

The percentage increased from 9.8 % to 11.2% over  a two-year span.

“This is really bad news. We were really moving in the right direction as a country for many many years now we’re going in the wrong direction,” said Georgetown’s Joan Alker.

She adds that health insurance is economic security for many families as it can offset costly emergency room visits.

Alker attributes the decline to restrictive measures put in place for the Affordable Care Act enrollment.
