Dallas Mayor Meets with FEMA in Request for Tornado Recovery Funds

WASHINGTON WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson met with Peter Gaynor, the administrator of FEMA, Wednesday as the city tries to receive federal assistance for tornado recovery efforts.

Gaynor and Mayor Johnson discussed the FEMA process and Dallas’ need for federal aid during the 30-minute meeting at FEMA’s offices.

U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have written letters to President Trump in support of Governor Abbott’s disaster declaration request.

“FEMA has been working diligently with the City and Dallas ISD as we build our case to receive federal assistance,” Mayor Johnson said. “We greatly appreciate the work of our federal and state partners in our effort to ensure our local taxpayers do not have to foot the entire bill created by this devastating tornado.”

FEMA has validated $32.5 million in damages to public infrastructure in the state. The City is also seeking other available federal funds to help cover the cost of the damage to road infrastructure, such as traffic lights.

Johnson said Dallas ISD continues to tally the total of uninsured damages from the storm. When that process is complete, he said he’s confident the city will receive federal help.
