FORT WORTH – The baby at the center of an ongoing legal battle between the parents and Cook Children’s Medical Center Hospital turned one year old on Saturday, with a court date Tuesday the next step in determining her fate.
Tinslee Lewis was born with heart and lung problems that require machines to keep her alive. The parents are searching for longer term care they believe could help their daughter; Cook Childrens’ Medical Center and a hospital ethics committee believes medical efforts to keep her alive are causing her pain and suffering.
Tuesday, the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth will hear arguments in the case. At center to this legal battle is a 1999 state law that allows hospitals to stop care if a hospital ethics committee votes as such.
Cook Children’s says their efforts to help Tinslee were causing more pain and suffering. It has stated it believes Tinslee will never fully recover.
