Movie Theaters Implementing Plans to Eventually Reopen

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Movie theaters will be able to open across Texas on Friday, as coronavirus restrictions will be lifted, but many aren’t ready quite yet.

According to Governor Greg Abbott, theaters can open at 25% capacity as of May 1. But Brian Schultz, CEO of Studio Movie Grill said Tuesday that the industry needs more time to perfect social distancing strategies and certain protocol.
“The worst thing that could happen is that if someone rushes and doesn’t get the processes down and that presents a problem,” Schultz said.

The Alamo Draft House and Cinemark also said this week that they don’t plan to open this weekend.

“Opening safely is a very complex project that involves countless new procedures and equipment, all of which require extensive training,” said a spokesperson for Alamo Draft House. “This is something we cannot and will not do casually or quickly. We will not be opening this weekend. But know this, when we do open, we will be providing the safest possible experience for both our staff and our guests and we can’t wait to see you all again.”

Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas in Dallas also said it wouldn’t reopen May 1.

As we work to define our reopening strategy and timeline, the safety of our guests and staff, will continue to be our top priority,” Cinepolis said in a statement. “We are closely monitoring the situation and plan to implement heightened cleaning regimen for the enhanced well-being of our guests and staff.”

An exact date when theaters will reopen is unclear.
