DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The State Fair of Texas announced Tuesday that the 2020 fair is canceled out of safety precautions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes as Texas experiences a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the State Fair of Texas will not open for the 2020 season,” the fair wrote in a statement posted on social media. “Our mission at the Fair is to celebrate all things Texan and with that comes being friendly, lending a helping hand, and looking out for others. This year, those essential traits of being a Texan matter more than ever. Right now, we must take care of our neighbors and loved ones.”

According to the State Fair Board of Directors, the Fair’s commitment to its nonprofit mission of promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement will continue. In addition, it’s committed to maintaining as many participation opportunities as possible for both livestock and creative arts.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said Tuesday that the fair made the safe and responsible decision.

“I love the State Fair of Texas, and I am saddened that I will not be able to take my family this year,” said Johnson. “COVID-19’s spread is rampant in our community, and public health must come first. We all have to do what it takes to slow this virus so we can save lives and livelihoods and get back to doing what we enjoy.”

The State Fair of Texas has been in existence for 134 years.

“Though we may not see each other in person this year, we can promise you we will be counting down the days until we can celebrate in 2021 and the many State Fair’s ahead of us,” the statement continued.

According to officials with the State Fair, the event typically generates $400 million a year.
