(WBAP/KLIF) — The Metroplex has recorded the first animal to test positive during the pandemic. A Dallas-Fort Worth family recently contracted COVID-19, which prompted a private veterinarian to test the family dog.
The two year old animal was tested and came back positive for the Coronavirus. According to state epidemiologist Susan Rollo, this isn’t the first animal to contract the virus in the United States. Although 5 cats, 5 dogs, a lion, and several tigers have tested positive across the country, this is the first animal case in Texas.
Staff at the veterinary clinic used proper personal protection equipment in administering the test, which came back positive. Rollo with the Texas Animal Health Commission says contracting COVID-19 from pets is unlikely. The two year old dog is doing well and is back home with its owners.
