Speculation Swirls About Fort Worth Water Contamination

(WBAP/KLIF) — Speculation is swirling that the DFW water supply could be contaminated. This after a Fort Worth well was found to contain cancer-causing chemicals.  The Navy tested seven wells near the Fort Worth Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base and found one that showed contamination.

The chemicals commonly know as PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl) were found in one private well near the base. PFAS is used in firefighting foams and flame retardants that navy firefighters use to extinguish flames in plane crashes and training exercises.

Navy Hydrologist Tread Kissam says the contamination is likely the result of naval firefighter training.  One of seven wells tested showed a concentration level that exceeds EPA standards. The Navy hasn’t tested the municipal water supply near the base since the city has responsibility for testing.

According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the EPA is likely to require municipalities to further test their water supply for PFAS in future years.
