DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- Members of the American Federation of Teachers Union are calling on Dallas ISD to not hold in person classes until 2021.

Dallas Alliance AFT President Rena Honea was among dozens who caravaned outside the DISD school board meeting Thursday.

“All campus employees are the ones doing the work and are going to risk their lives in these buildings and unfortunately they were never brought into the planning conversations,” Honea said.

The DISD Board met to discuss plans for the upcoming school year, which is set to start next month. Outside the district’s administration building some group members stood with mock body bags to represent Covid-19 deaths.

“Smart people making bad decisions for the wrong reasons are evil. Please do not put our children in harms way,” said DISD bus driver Anthony Peterson.

Many teachers were outraged, saying it’s not safe to start school under these circumstances.

“We don’t need a crystal ball to know what’s going to happen,” said Tanya Hernandez, Elementary Teacher at DISD.

“I am scared for myself and for my family but more than that, I am scared for my community,” said Rosie Curts DISD High School Teacher in Oak Cliff.

For now, in person and virtual instruction will be offered September 8th.

According to Dallas ISD’s website the last day of school moved from May 27, 2021, to June 18, 2021 and previously planned holidays in October are removed due to the cancellation of the State Fair. Also, Tuesday, November 3, 2020, was added as a holiday and grading periods are increased from six-week to nine-week periods.
