DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- The American Red Cross is assisting North Texans impacted by severe weather over the weekend.

The storm produced damaging downburst winds between Briar and Azle, and a lightning strike causing a large apartment fire in Lewisville.

Krystal Smith with DFW Red Cross said they’ve provided shelter and food to more than 200 people and they are also providing virtual assistance.

“We have mental health and spiritual care to help if they need prescriptions refilled or maybe if they lost their glasses in the fire,” said Smith.

Smith said caseworkers will continue to work with residents to provide assistance and help connect them with additional community resources.

“We are also trying to keep everyone safe by wearing masks and gloves, social distancing and helping out virtually when we can but it’s definitely a trying time for a lot of people right now,” she said.

North Texas volunteers are also providing support for Hurricane Laura evacuees in one of the state-run emergency shelters in Mesquite.

Smith is encouraging anyone impacted by the severe weather and in need of assistance to call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
