FBI Warns Public About Emerging Health Care Scams Related to COVID-19

WASHINGTON D.C.  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning the public about several health care scams related to the COVID-19 pandemic that have been circulating nationwide.

According to FBI investigators, criminals are selling fake COVID-19 test kits and unapproved cures and treatments via telemarketing calls, social media platforms and door-to-door visits.

The agency said the scammers are telling potential victims the treatments are free in order to gain access to their personal and health insurance information, including their birth dates, Social Security numbers and financial data.

In addition to the fake tests, cures and treatments, scammers are also claiming to be medical professionals and are demanding payment for a friend or relative’s COVID-19 treatment.

The FBI is urging anyone that has been treated for COVID-19 to check their medical bills and the explanation of benefits from their provider, government health program or insurance company.

Calvin A. Shivers, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division, said it’s unfortunate that criminals are manipulating the pandemic for financial gain.

“We ask all Americans to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to these schemes,” said Shivers.

Anyone who thinks they may be a victim of COVID-19 fraud, should report it to the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at (866) 720-5721 or [email protected] or call 1 (800) CALL-FBI.
