Pilot Project of Oklahoma DOC to Find Cellphones Used By Inmates

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – The Oklahoma Department of Corrections says it will take part in a pilot project intended to find cellphones being used by inmates in state prisons.

The department on Thursday said the 60-day project will begin in October at the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center with inmates required to wear ankle monitors. The monitors will detect cell phone signals inside the prison and alert staff members.

Prison officials say inmates use cellphones to run drug operations outside the prisons and to coordinate violent attacks, including one last year that left one inmate dead and dozens injured.
