DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Big Tex has spent the last 68 years as the official state fair of Texas greeter, but this year was a little different. Because of the coronavirus, the fair was canceled, but still offered fans a drive through food option. The 55 foot tall talking cowboy welcomed thousands of fans in their cars this year, but he will be removed from Big Tex Circle at Fair Park Tuesday morning. The last day the public will have the option to see Big Tex is Sunday.
Big Tex wore his face mask for this year’s festivities. It is unsure if he will still need his mask for next year.
The removal of Big Tex on Tuesday will not be open to the public. In a written statement the Fair said “Due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, this year is only open to media. Everyone in attendance will be required to wear protective face masks and maintain social distancing, to help prevent any further spread of COVID-19.” Big Tex will return to his post in Fair Park to welcome visitors for the 2021 State Fair of Texas, which is scheduled to open Friday, September 24 and run through Sunday, October 17.
