Fort Worth Street to be Renamed, Dedicated to Atatiana Jefferson

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- The Fort Worth City Council approved to rename a street where a black woman was killed by a police officer last year.

The stretch of Allen avenue and east Maddox Avenue in the Hillside Morningside neighborhood will be renamed Atatiana Jefferson Memorial Parkway.

Jefferson lived along that street and there’s also a mural of her painted there.

District 8 Councilwoman Kelly Allen Grey says Atatiana Jefferson’s neighbor, James Smith led the effort.

“We want to continue to say her name we want to continue to remember the life and legacy of Atatiana Jefferson,” said Allen Grey.

Grey said they are hoping to get the signage installed by December.

Jefferson was shot and killed October 2019 when former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean responded to an open door call and shot her through a window.

Dean was fired from the department and has been indicted on murder charges.

No trial date has been set and COVID-19 has delayed many hearings. However, the Tarrant County District Attorney is eager to get this scheduled.
