FDA Approves First LabCorp At-Home COVID-19 Test Kit

SILVER SPRING, MD  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Americans now have access to an at-home COVID-19 test kit that can be processed through a lab.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved LabCorp’s Pixel COVID-19 Home Collection Kit Thursday.

Jeff Shuren, M.D.,J.D., director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health said the approval will help in the ongoing effort to get more Americans tested.

“While many home collection kits can be prescribed with a simple online questionnaire, this newly authorized direct-to-consumer collection kit removes that step from the process, allowing anyone to collect their sample and send it to the lab for processing,” he said.

It can be purchased by anyone 18 years and older without a prescription. The user will collect a nasal swab sample and send the kit in for testing to LabCorp.

According to LabCorp, the test results will be given within 48 hours.

The company said positive or invalid results will be delivered to the user by a phone call from a health care provider.

Negative results are delivered via email or online portal.

The kit costs about $120, according to the LabCorp website.
