American Red Cross Partners with NFL to Urge Residents to Donate Blood, Plasma

NORTH TEXAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The American Red Cross is in need of blood and has partnered with the National Football League to encourage North Texans to donate blood and plasma.

The organization’s Krystal Smith said donations typically decline during winter but the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue.

“With the rise and COVID cases and hospitalizations, a lot of people may be hesitant to come out donate blood. So, the Red Cross has taken extra precautions to make sure it’s a safe experience. Blood is critical and every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood,” she said.

The ongoing pandemic has shown no signs of slowing down, increasing the need for plasma.

Smith said the more donors give, the higher the chances of finding the necessary antibodies to help doctors in the fight.

“All of the blood products are tested for COVID-19 antibodies. If the antibodies are in your blood, then that can taken and used for patients to help them battle the coronavirus,” said Smith.

To encourage residents to donate, the Red Cross NFL partnership is offering some coveted prizes.

Anyone who donates in January will be entered to win two tickets to next year’s Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles.

Those who enter by January 20th will be entered to win the “Big Game at Home” package that includes a 65-inch television and $500 gift card.
