DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A North Texas man is free from prison after having his sentenced commuted in the final hours of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Before leaving Office on Wednesday former President Trump granted clemency for more than 140 people, including a commuted life sentence for Ferrell Scoot, the Dallas man sentenced to life in prison on a third strike marijuana charge in 2008. Scott’s attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, argued for years that the punishment didn’t fit the crime and said on Wednesday that the commutation proves there is hope for reform in the justice system.

“[People] can see his case as an example for the greater need to push for more transformative change,” said Barnett. “There should be no one in prison for marijuana in my opinion, when there are people making millions of dollars off the legalization of marijuana.”

Scott spent 12 years behind bars. His charges won’t be cleared from his record but he was ordered to be released from prison for time served.
