Dallas Zoo Seeks Public’s Help Capturing Bird Who Flew the Coop

(DALLAS) – WBAP/KLIF – If you’re in North Texas and hear something from up in a tree say “HIYA”! it could be Onyx the Dallas Zoo Escapee, who flew the coop during training exercises Thursday.    Onyx is described as a talking, white breasted crow, who can speak a few English phrases, according to zoo officials.

Dallas Zoo is asking for the public’s help in finding the escaped bird.  Onyx is described as a black “pied” crow, black with a white chest patch.  Originally from Africa and nearby islands, the Pied Crow is considered as intelligent as great apes, with ability to solve problems, make tools, and mimic just about any sound including human languages.

Heating is essential for these birds, and North Texas has a couple of cold fronts moving in; one very chilly arriving mid week.  Dallas Zoo is asking for the public’s help locating Onyx.  He was last seen winging his way from the zoo directly toward the Bishop Arts District on escape day Thursday.   Pied crows are not considered feasible to be kept as pets; large birds, they require an enormous, professional-sized enclosure, with plenty of room to fly distances; also requiring a great deal of consistent mental stimulation.

If you hear or see this bird, you’re asked to immediately message the Dallas Zoo on social media.  They’ll send a team.
