Texas Business Owners and Officials Have Mixed Emotions Over Lifting of COVID Restrictions

Texans who run small businesses are mostly relieved at Gov. Greg Abbott’s lifting of COVID-19 restrictions but there is also some confusion and concern. The governor’s order goes into effect March 10, next Wednesday. Fearing that it would be misunderstood Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley just lifted the mask mandate immediately. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price extended the relief to city government, as well, though she is not generally in agreement with the governor’s decision. She called the decision premature but said the order has gone out and will be followed.

Some business owners in Fort Worth are conflicted, saying they personally worry the end of limitations will cause a spike in infections and possibly a return to strict closures. A few, interviewed by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, say while they welcome a return to business as usual they will still require masks for customers and employees until more vaccinations are accomplished and the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to drop.
