Dallas-Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF) – A note left behind by one of two brothers involved in the gruesome murder-suicide in Allen this week detailed how easy it was to buy the guns used to kill their family before taking their own lives.
19-year old Farhan Towhid said his 21-year old brother Tanvir Towhid lied about mental illness on forms at a gun shop.
Gun reform advocate Ed Scruggs says it’s not the first time that has happened in Texas, telling our media partner WFAA-TV:
“The Midland-Odessa mass shooting, the shooter lied on a background check. The Sutherland Springs church shooting; that shooting lied on a background check. It’s easy to go in and lie.”
The brothers killed four family members and themselves.
Scruggs is with Texas Gun Sense which advocates for common sense gun reform, says the Allen shooting is a tragedy that didn’t need to happen.
Current legislative proposals in Austin to address the issue have gotten bipartisan support. Republicans and Democrats are sponsoring bills related to false or misleading statements made to illegally acquire a firearm. Among them are Senate Bill 162, House Bill 347, and House Bill 880.
