AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Constitutional Carry is likely to become law in Texas as it gains approval from the state Senate.
The permitless carry bill would do away with requirement to have a license to carry a gun. It passed the house but briefly stalled in the Senate, before passing with approval from all 18 Republican Senators on Wednesday.
Critics say the bill would put more guns in the hands of criminals but it’s author, Senator Charles Schwertner, argues the bill comes down to two things.
“The advancement of self defense,” said Senator Schwertner. “And the belief in, and trust of, law abiding citizens.”
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick praised the bill’s passage.
“I am proud that the Texas Senate passed House Bill 1927 today, the Constitutional Carry bill, which affirms every Texan’s right to self-defense and our state’s strong support for our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” said Lt. Gov. Patrick. “In the Lone Star State, the Constitution is our permit to carry. I congratulate Senator Charles Schwertner for his leadership on this important issue and for the thoughtful and respectful debate in the Texas Senate today. We have moved quickly on this legislation and I want to thank all those involved who helped gather the votes needed to pass this historic bill.”
Lawmakers are finalizing the bill before it heads to the Governor’s desk where it’s expected to be signed.
