Texas Senator Calls For A Per-Mile Tax On Big Trucks

Washington (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Senator John Cornyn discussed the possibility of a new tax to pay for repairs to the country’s infrastructure. He spoke with the Senate Finance Committee about the idea of a 25 cent per mile tax on heavy trucks: semis, moving trucks, cement mixers, and such.

Cornyn told the committee “we’ve got to come up with some money from somewhere,” and that would bring in $33 billion a year, nearly as much as the current fuel taxes.

So far, Cornyn’s proposal has created a firestorm of protest from trucking companies.
