Dallas/Fort Worth – As new daily COVID-19 cases continue to soar across Texas and nationwide, the American Academy of Pediatrics on Tuesday said that children now account for 22% of new cases in the U.S.
In many cases children showed symptoms just days after started school, a testament highly infectious and rapidly spreading Delta variant. The strain is 1000 times more virulent than the original COVID-19 virus and more infectious for children as well. Hospital pediatric units are being overun with severely sick children.
New stats across North Texas on Tuesday included entire three-day holiday weekend.
Collin County topped the new case count for the period with 2,426 and 9 additional fatalities.
Tarrant County reported 1,725 new cases and seven deaths.
Dallas County reported 1,285 cases and 9 deaths.
Denton County reported 1,052 new cases.
Rural Texas as well is seeing an extreme surge in new cases.
Healthcare officials and others urge every eligible Texas to get vaccinated to stop the spread.
Matt Zavadsky with Tarrant County’s primary ambulance service says COVID-related calls to the agency are up 165% since June, “highly concerning and alarming,” he said.
Zavasky told our newsroom that crews are feeling COVID-fatigue that he says could have been prevented with vaccinations and good hygiene.
