Mesquite Community Pays Tribute to Fallen Officer

MESQUITE (WBAP/KLIF) – The City of Mesquite is paying tribute to a fallen Police Officer.

The Mesquite community linked arms and prayed during a candlelight vigil outside the Police department Sunday night to remember the life of Officer Richard Houston.

Officer Houston was shot Friday outside of a Mesquite grocery store. A suspect was also shot and hospitalized in critical condition.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the hearts of Texans are are with the family and loved ones of Officer Houston.

“This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers take every day by putting their lives on the line to serve and protect our communities,” said Governor Abbott. Cecilia and I ask our fellow Texans to join us in praying for the officer’s family and the Mesquite Police Department during this difficult time.”

Funeral services for Officer Houston are set for Thursday at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church. The Service will start at noon. The public is welcome to attend the service, according to MPD. The family has requested a private gravesite ceremony to include the immediate family alongside the Mesquite Police Department Family.
