FDA Approves Pfizer’s COVID-19 Oral AntiViral Pill for Emergency Use

WASHINGTON D.C. (WBAP/KLIF News) – A new COVID-19 antiviral pill will soon be available to American consumers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized emergency use of Pfizer’s pill Paxlovid.

It’s the first prescription bill in the U.S. to treat COVID-19 that does not require and injection or an IV.

Earlier this month, Pfizer released the results of a 2,246-person study that showed Paxlovid reduced hospitalizations and deaths by almost 89% among high-risk adults when taken shortly after COVID-19 symptoms emerged.

The Associated Press reports the initial supply of the drug is limited with just enough to treat tens of thousands of people.

The Wednesday announcement comes as the omicron variant of COVID-19 spreads rapidly nationwide, including here in Texas.
