DALLAS – (WBAP/KLIF)- The suspected gunman accused of taking hostages inside Colleyville’s Congregation Beth Israel Saturday is now identified by the FBI as 44 year old British citizen Malik Faisal Akram.
Four hostages were held several hours Saturday, including the Rabbi of the synagogue. Part of the initial event, including the gunman’s comments, were streamed online as the Congregation normally does stream many of the gatherings. The stream suddenly ended with no audio and a posted graphic showing on viewer’s screens, roughly an hour into the suspect’s breach of the building.
A crack hostage rescue team from Quantico was flown to North Texas to help end the siege, which did result in the death of the suspect, though no injuries have been reported among the four hostages.
City of Colleyville’s Police Department utilized it’s Facebook page to keep citizens updated, after a seven block area surrounding the affected building was cordoned off to the public, and the building’s surrounding area evacuated as the takeover continued.
