(WBAP/KLIF) — ERCOT and Tarrant County leaders held a virtual town hall, Tuesday, to address the reliability of the state’s power grid. ERCOT CEO Brad Jones says the long term plan for Texas is to increase the generation capacity. The death of 240 Texans during last February’s winter storms caused resignations among ERCOT’s governing board and the revamping of the state’s Public Utilities Commission.

Jones also indicated transmission and distribution providers need to develop better rolling blackout plans to limit durations. Jones also says the recent winterization of generation sites across the state was successful, but more needs to be done, such as requiring power companies to re-allocate power districts to allow a more even distribution of outages among customers.
During a recent North Texas cold spell, Jones was impressed with the results of the recent winterization of generating facilities. Upwards of 26-million Texas customers rely upon ERCOT to manage the delivery of electric power year round. Some wonder if renewable energy canprevent winter storm power outages.
State leaders are trying to shore up power generation reliability, while State Senator Kelly Hancock says when Texas lives are on the line, power reliability is critical and the state is looking at increasing the number of generating facilities to keep up with the state’s population boom.
