Convicted Murderer Wins Reprieve

Houston (WBAP/KLIF) – A convicted Texas murderer who was scheduled to be the first to be executed by the state this year has received a reprieve. Michael Dean Gonzales was scheduled to die by lethal injection Tuesday evening for murdering an elderly couple during a burglary in West Texas nearly 30 years ago. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a request by his attorneys to stay his execution. Gonzales’ case will be sent back to the trial judge in Odessa to review claims that he is intellectually disabled, and so cannot constitutionally be executed. There is also an allegation that prosecutors may have withheld evidence in the case. A prosecutor with the Texas Attorney General’s Office says various pieces of evidence show Gonzales is guilty.
