Dallas ISD Basketball Player Arrested Ahead of State Tournament in San Antonio

A Dallas Kimball high school basketball player was arrested and a student trainer was injured after a player’s gun discharged on the team bus after a practice in San Antonio on Wednesday night.

18-year-old Kyron Henderson faces with two felony gun charges.

The team was preparing for the state tournament and was heading to dinner after practice. Police say the gun was in a bag and went off when it was loaded on the bus.

District officials say the student trainer was taken to a hospital, where she had surgery and is now home with family in Dallas.

“There’s no excuses for what happened last night,” said Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. “This is extremely disappointing that we are here on the verge of another championship and we have to endure this situation,” he said.

Hinojosa said Henderson was immediately removed from the team and the team still has a chance for the state title.

“I have been in contact with the University Interscholastic League and talking to their leadership…They are appreciative that we moved quickly to deal with this matter internally, and they will allow Kimball to participate in the state semifinals. They agree with us that you shouldn’t punish the entire team for the actions of a few or an individual,” said Hinojosa.
