US Revokes “Most Favored Nation” Trade Status for Russia, Announces Additional Import Bans

WASHINGTON D.C. (WBAP/KLIF News) – As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine intensifies, so do the level repercussions from world leaders.

The United States joined the European Union and other G7 countries in revoking the “most favored nation” trade status for Russia.

The move allows the US and allies to impose higher tariffs on some Russian imports. The US also banned imports of Russian seafood, alcohol and diamonds.

President Biden made the announced Friday morning and said additional punishment is needed in response to Russia’s ongoing attack.

“Revoking PNTR for Russia is going to make it harder for Russia to do business with the United States and doing it with in unison other nations to make up half of the global economy will be another crushing blow to the Russian economy that’s already suffering badly from our sanctions,” he said.

The President said that although Russia tried to divide the world, the Kremlin’s actions actually made various countries ban together.

“We will send money and food and aide to save the Ukrainian people and I will welcome Ukrainian refugees. We should welcome them here with open arms if they need access and we’re going to provide more support for Ukraine,” he said.

The US Senate overwhelmingly voted in favor or passing a package worth nearly $14 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine Thursday night.
