COLLEGE STATION (WBAP/KLIF News ) – North Texas is under an elevated risk of wildfires this weekend and into early next week.
The combination of warm temperatures, gusty winds and dry vegetation create the perfect storm for a small fire to spiral quickly out of control.
Texas A&M Forest Service’s Public Information Officer Erin O’Connor said current conditions are going to get worse.
“That area of critically dry fuel or vegetation is just going to expand,” she said.
It’s already been since in North Texas this week, as several massive wildfires continue to burn since being sparked late last week.
The Eastland Complex Fire, which consists of 7 separate fires in Eastland and Brown counties, has burned 54,513 acres and 80 percent contained.
The Big L Fire in Erath and Hood counties has burned 10,177 acres and is 90 percent contained.
O’Connor said local and state response teams are fatigued due to a dramatic increase in activity.
“It’s about double than what we’ve had in previous years in our normal average of wildfire activity. So, everyone is very busy,” she said.
Texas A&M Forest Service is urging residents to pay attention to any local burn bans, avoid outdoor controlled burns and any activity that could spark a fire.
