Amber Guyger Denied Case Review by Texas Highest Criminal Court

Amber Guyger’s appellate attorney has filed paperwork preserving her ability to appeal her murder conviction and sentence.

DALLAS – (WBAP/KLIF) – The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upholds the murder conviction and ten year prison sentence of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger. Guyger was convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of neighbor Botham Jean. In her appeal for review of a lower court decision to uphold the 2019 conviction and sentence, Guyger argued she believed she had entered her own apartment when she shot and killed Jean negated her culpability for murder.

Jean was at home when Guyger entered his apartment. In court, she stated she believed she had entered her apartment and believed Jean was an intruder. She was originally arrested on a manslaughter charge, but a grand jury later indicted her on a murder charge. Guyger was fired from the Dallas Police Department a few weeks after the killing.

This decision likely means Guyer exhausted all avenues of further appeal.
