Record Breaking Heat Wave Across North Texas

(UPDATED 05.08.2022 12:15 pm) National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Fano reports a nearly 20 degree warmer than usual heat wave sitting atop the Lone Star State. Fano says it’s unlikely heat or humidity will significantly ease through at least Saturday of next weekend. With continued tinder dry conditions almost statewide and through the nation’s Southwest, officials urge us not to burn anything outside and to be mindful of anything that could cause a spark to begin a wildfire; that includes dragging chains or even starting a vehicle on dry grass and other debris. Temperatures will continue to remain in the 90’s for this week ahead, but with high humidity levels, “feels like” temperatures will reach into the 100’s all week as expected. Temperatures in North Texas are expected to reach a physical reading of 96 today/Sunday with a heat index to 101; 105Fis expected in San Antonio with a heat index of at least 106.

(FORT WORTH) The National Weather Service warns of a sudden dump into serious summertime temperatures beginning this weekend, with unusual heat for this time of year expected to last through at least all of next week. Temperatures today/Saturday call for a heat index of 101F, and it could be hotter on Sunday in North Texas.
Red flag extreme fire danger warnings are posted for much of the nation’s Southwest, including parts of West Texas, the Mojave Desert through California and Nevada, and New Mexico, where firefighters are still battling fierce wildfires. Winds there are expected to reach or be sustained at around 30 miles an hour, making dangerous conditions worse.

North Texas temperatures will run 10 to 15 degrees above normal through at least Friday, with humidity pushing heat indices to deep summer-like conditions. Forecasters suggest we stay in touch and check often with the elderly, those alone, and on pets, ensuring they have shelter from the sun and adequate water supplies.
