Justice Department Announces Investigation into Uvalde Police Response to Elementary School Shooting

(WASHINGTON DC) The Justice Department announces it will investigate the police response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School last week that left 19 children and 2 adults shot to death in their classrooms. Police response has been sharply criticized, as Texas officials have announced impacted children were calling 9-1-1 pleading for police help as police officers stood outside the school and reportedly, in the hallway outside the impacted classrooms, for as much as one hour before breaching what was reported as a locked classroom door, and finally, neutralizing the suspect

Texas officials indicate the head of the Uvalde School district police agency ordered officers at the scene not to breach the classroom door, believing the shooter was barricaded, alone, and no longer posed a threat to children or their teachers. Reports indicate to access the locked classroom in which the shooter remained, teams waited for janitor’s keys. It has not been explained why that assessment delayed a faster police response when children were reported to be repeatedly calling 9-1-1 asking for police help.

A total of 38 people were shot; many are still receiving treatment in Uvalde and San Antonio hospitals; many in serious or critical condition, health officials report, but, “stable”.

President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden traveled to San Antonio Sunday and onward to Uvalde to spend several hours meeting with victim’s families.
