(WBAP/KLIF) — The largest July 4th fireworks show in North Texas was cut short due to high winds and grass fires. “Fort Worth’s Fourth” was to be a spectacular fireworks presentation at the Panther Island Pavilion along the Trinity River. However, Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis says high winds and grass fires ended the show soon after its start because the heat compromised the fireworks.
According to Fire Chief Jim Davis, the city’s own fireworks show was called off due to grass fires along the trinity river that broke out around six to seven minutes into the fireworks show. According to Davis, their first priority was the safety of spectators across the river and those near the remaining fireworks. Firefighters found more than a thousand undetonated fireworks, which posed a public safety hazard. After securing the shells, fire crews began to extinguish the grass fires along the banks of Trinity River.
A resumption of the show began at midnight, but was called off a short time later. Firefighters fielded over a thousand calls of grass fires around Fort Worth during the entire Independence Day celebration.
