UPDATE: A Dallas County Jury found Yaser Said Guilty in the 2008 shooting deaths of his teen daughters. The jury deliberated about 5 hours before returning the guilty verdict. Said was automatically sentenced to life without parole.
DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The North Texas father accused of shooting his teenage daughters to death in so-called honor killings testified on Monday in his own defense.
Yaser Said is accused of shooting his daughters inside his taxi cab in 2008, but he denies those accusations. He is said to have been angry the girls were dating outside the Muslim faith.
On Monday, inside a Dallas County Courtroom, Said suggested it could have been friends that harmed the girls. He said he was afraid he was being followed the night the girls were murdered. According to his testimony, the left the girls in the cab and ran into the woods, later learning they had been murdered.
“I thought that some one was coming after me to harm me,” Yaser said through a translator. “I did not think anyone wanted to harm my girls.”
Much of the time Yaser spent on the witness stand was spent addressing attorney objections. When he finished, both sides rested.
Closing arguments in the trial are slated to begin on Tuesday.
