AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the chief of the team investigating the failed police response to the Uvalde massacre retired in September.

Texas DPS posted a notice of Texas Rangers Chief Chance Collins and Assistant Chief Brian Burzynski’s departures on its website but did not explain why they were leaving.

The department has been under increased scrutiny for what many perceived as lack of transparency over its role in the response to the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Dozens of DPS troopers were some of the first on the scene. At least seven members of DPS are under investigation for their actions.

Last week, Texas DPS fired its first trooper in connection with the botched response. Officials served termination papers to Sergeant Juan Maldonado on Friday.

The Texas Public Safety Commission is meeting Thursday morning and an update from the DPS director is on the agenda.

On Tuesday, November 1, Uvalde families and members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus and other community leaders will host six events statewide to draw attention to gun violence prevention.
