MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF) – The McKinney Police Department is warning of a developing trend among thieves ahead of the holiday shopping season.

According to MPD, a man wearing a hat and mask, approached a shopper around 12:30 on November 11 in the Costco parking lot. He told the woman there was something at the rear of her vehicle. While the woman began to look, another suspect entered her SUV and took off with her wallet.

Give days prior, Police said an elderly man was distracted by a man and a woman asking for directions while standing at the back of his vehicle. That is when another suspect entered his vehicle and stole several credit cards.

“As more and more people head out to shop for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, we ask that you be mindful of your surroundings at all times,” MPD said in a statement. “Lock, Take, Hide. If you leave your vehicle, make sure it is locked. Always. If you can, take everything out of your vehicle. If you must leave items inside your vehicle, make sure you hide them or put them in the trunk.”

Police discourage leaving personal items inside a vehicle, even for a short period of time.
