“Project LIFT” Health Initiative Opening Gyms in Black and Brown Communities in North Texas

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A new fitness initiative called “Project LIFT” is opening up gyms across North Texas in communities whose health needs have been historically overlooked.

The initiative’s goal is to open 500 fitness clubs nationwide in 50 black and brown communities over the next five years.

Retro Fitness opened a location in Dallas this week and will give residents access to exercise equipment, health seminars as well as bring jobs.

James Collins, Managing Partner of Eastwood Capital Partners, LLC, said there’s a reason they’re targeting black and brown communities.

“Many times our communities have been left behind. Many people have heard about food deserts. We think there are health club deserts and health clubs are a valuable part of the infrastructure across the country,” he said.

Each gym will offer patrons top of the line equipment, thoughtfully crafted group classes, a recovery and relaxation area, a smoothie bar, and a great retail experience.

“We’re going to open are clubs to folks that want to have seminars….where there’s mental health or nutrition. We’re also going to…as a part of Project LIFT…give a percentage of our revenue back to not for profits in each area where our clubs reside for the life of the club,” said Collins.

A key component of PROJECT LIFT’s goal is to do more than tackle fitness and aims to have a multi-fold impact on their client’s lives.

“We actually want our people to come and work out. So, from a health perspective we want to attack the issues that disproportionately impacted our communities. That’s one. Two. From an economic standpoint we’re going to be bringing jobs and career opportunities for people,” he said. “We’re going to be building a lot of gyms. So, from a construction perspective, we’re going to be spending millions of dollars in the area to build and maintain these gyms. “
