(WBAP/KLIF) — One Texas legislator is pushing to abolish a state holiday. Democrat Representative Jarvis Johnson introduced a bill into 88th Legislative Session to end “Confederate Heroes Day” as a Texas holiday.

Johnson says the holiday ironically falls near Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Representative from Houston says celebrating the holiday is sending the wrong message. Johnson is hoping the third time’s a charm as he previously filed the bill in 2019 and 2021, however focus centered on removing Confederate monuments and the bill never got past the State Affairs Committee.
He believes that this year’s bill will make it out of committee to force a vote, as the measure is backed by Republicans. Johnson feels that those who fought with the confederacy shouldn’t be termed heroes.
