Irving Police Searching for More Victims of Man Accused of Decades-Long Child Sex Abuse

IRVING (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Irving Police Department is looking for additional victims who may have been sexually abused by 69-year-old Averil Cardwell.

He was arrested in August 23,2022 for continuous sex abuse of a young child at his current residence in Cedar Hill after a 21-year-old woman said she was assaulted by Cardwell between the ages of three and eight.

While investigating the case, a second victim came forward.

Cardwell turned himself into Dallas County Jail on October 2,2022 after a second warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a young child was issued for him.

Irving Police spokesman Officer Robert Reeves said investigators have so far identified four victims dating back to 1986.

“He was trying to do multiple different variations from inviting neighborhood kids and friends over to his house, trying to contact people within the community to become friends with their families and then assaulting their children,” he said.

He’s since bonded out of jail but police said additional charges are pending.

Anyone who may be a victim or know of a victim is asked to contact Investigator Padrutt at 972-721-6565 or the Irving Police Department at 972-273-1010.
