
GRAPEVINE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Grapevine Police are warning parents and students after receiving a scary report from a child at Dove Elementary.
The boy told investigators a man driving a black jeep or SUV with an empty spare tire rack on the back yelled at him to get into his vehicle as he walked home Tuesday afternoon.
The department’s Amanda Mcnew said they’re asking everyone to be on alert.
“The two things that we’re asking parents and the community to do today is to if they see that vehicle call us and also just to keep an eye on kids and remind them about stranger danger and things they can do so kids stay aware of their surroundings,” she said.
The child was able to was able to run away and make it home safely.
McNew said the incident drives home the importance of teaching children about stranger danger.
“That’s a good credit to the parents to the school to everyone… to let the kids know…it doesn’t have to be a difficult situation this is an easy thing to say ‘if you’re uncomfortable or unsafe run away. ‘ That’s the best thing you can do. That’s exactly what happened in this case. We’re very grateful that the kid made it home safely and was able to give a description of the car so now we know what to look for,” she said.
The department also wants to remind parents to make a list for their child of safe places they can run to that are along their route home.
The is no description of the driver of the vehicle. Grapevine Police have increased presence around school campuses as a precaution.
