A Grief-Stricken Mother Speaks Out after School Shooting in Arlington

Rashawn Poirier, 16; Roshone Jacob (WFAA)

Arlington, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Mourners gathered at two churches in Arlington Tuesday to pay tribute to the victims of a shooting Monday outside Lamar High School

Those who came out to Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and New World United Methodist Church remain in shock by the incident that left 16-year old Jashawn Poirier dead and another student injured.

Our media partner WFAA-TV reports that victim 16-year old Jashawn Poirier and his family had moved from Michigan to Arlington last year. The teen’s grief-stricken mother Roshone Jacob spoke exclusively to the station outside New World United Methodist Church.

She said that she’s still “in disbelief.” She had just dropped him off at school and 9 minutes later she got the call that he had been shot. She says that she “screamed and started crying.”

Meantime, the alleged teen shooter appeared in juvenile court Tuesday on a capital murder charge. Police say that he was armed with a long gun as students were returning from Spring Break early Monday morning when he opened fire and ran off.

Defense attorney Lisa Herick told reporters, “Please hold off on judging this young man until we’ve had an opporunity to hear his story.”

Another student was grazed by shrapnel and taken to a hospital by a parent.
