(WBAP/KLIF) — Texas teachers are a step closer to getting a pay raise. Senate Bill 9 provides a $2,000 pay increase for teachers, while giving educators in districts with fewer than 20,000 students a $4,000 raise. The difference is intended to close the salary gap between teachers in rural and urban school districts.
Alliance/AFT Union President Rena Honea says it’s laughable that lawmakers think $2,000 is adequate. Honea says although teachers are grateful for a raise, with an over $30-billion state surplus it should be more. She believes the raise should be between $10,000 and $15,000.
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick says the move is to continue with the state’s 2019 effort to reward teachers that stay in the classroom. Senate Bill 9 is now headed to the House for consideration.
