DESOTO (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Desoto ISD is banning backpacks for students in grades 6-12 for the remainder of the school year.
Starting Monday, April 24th, students will only be allowed to bring a small clutch-size bag for personal care items on campus.
“We’re really trying to help students make good decisions around not bringing items to school that may pose a distraction,” said Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones, DeSoto ISD Chief Communication Officer.
She said officials are still considering what to do about student laptops.
“That decision could include taking up laptops for the remainder of the year and go into a class setting that way students still have access to devices and we still maintain a one-to-one access as we continue throughout the school year,” said Blackmon-Jones.
Security will also continue to monitor high-traffic areas in and around campus.
“In Desoto ISD, We’re focused on trying to maintain safe schools…maintain orderly schools…and making sure that we’re being responsive to not only trends that we’re seeing but also to what our community needs. So, even though we’ve heard some responses around decisions like this, we’re definitely taking that feedback into consideration and applying it to our forward decisions,” said Blackmon-Jones.
