FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Fort Worth firefighter was injured when a wall collapsed as crews battled one-alarm blaze at an abandoned church that erupted early Thursday morning.
When firefighters arrived at the building located in the 6000 block of Tension Drive just south of Lancaster and west of Loop 820 around 2 a.m., flames and smoke could be seen shooting through the roof.
Mike Forbes with our media partner WFAA TV said the situation quickly escalated.
“The firefighter was on the outside of the wall fighting the fire when that wall collapsed and temporarily trapped him. He was quickly extricated by his fellow firefighters and he’s recovering at Harris Hospital downtown. He’s expected to be okay,” he said.
Two people were saved from a nearby house that also caught fire.
“Two elderly gentlemen who firefighters are calling homeless men were living in the abandoned home. When I was looking at the fire, I saw one gentlemen coming out of the smoke. He was being led by firefighters,” said Forbes. “He didn’t require any medical attention.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
