AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said on Tuesday that he is tired of dysfunction in the State House of Representatives.
Patrick was speaking at an event hosted by the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The comments came hours after Governor Abbott announced he would call several special sessions to address his legislative priorities. Human smuggling at the southern border and property taxes are listed as the priorities to focus on during the first special session.
“While the Senate worked hard all session to efficiently conduct the people’s business, many important issues affecting Texans died in the Texas House,” Lt. Gov. Patrick said. “Senate Bill 3, the Property Tax Relief Bill, is vitally important to homeowners across the state, and the Legislature cannot retire until we achieve the biggest tax cut in the history of Texas.”
As well as Senate Bill 3, is urging Governor Abbott to consider other conservative bills to be included in a Special Session call. Those issues include teacher pay raises, bail reform, an election audit bill, virtual education, school choice, and more.
“I believe these bills are important for the future of Texas,” said Patrick. “They will help to significantly reduce property taxes, give parents more choices in their children’s education, secure our border, and ensure our election process is accurate and accountable.”
Patrick blamed the House for failing to pass the Governor’s priorities. He said that members of the House waited until the final few weeks of the legislature to take action on priority legislation.
The Texas House and Senate opened the first special session Tuesday afternoon.
