(WBAP/KLIF) — The Plano ISD Board of Trustees approved a school marshal program to comply with the Texas Legislature’s passage of House Bill 3, which requires all schools to have an armed security officer on campus.

According to Plano ISD Superintendent Dr. Teresa Williams, school marshals will be district employees and cover all campuses not staffed with school resource officers (SRO). All secondary schools are already covered by SRO’s, so the new marshals will cover primarily elementary campuses. Plano ISD will continue a working relationship with local police departments, who have SRO’s at all secondary schools.
Once fully implemented, all 73 Plano ISD schools in Richardson, Murphy, Dallas, Allen, and Plano will have armed security personnel on campus during daytime hours. The cost of hiring and maintaining the security officers will be approximately $4.1 million.
