DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The original director of scouting for the Dallas Cowboys, Gil Brandt died Thursday morning at the age of 91. Brandt helped coach Tom Landry and General Manager Tex Schramm build the franchise starting in 1960.
He ran the Cowboys scouting department from 1960-1989 and is considered the godfather of modern scouting. Brandt was overshadowed in the 1970’s by head coach Tom Landry and Tex Schramm as part of the trio that built America’s Team. He was the personnel director for 28 years and worked alongside both Landry and Schramm to win Super Bowls in 1972 and 1978. Although it took Brandt 30 years longer than Landry and Schramm to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was able to remain involved with the NFL by adapting to the social media age.
Brandt was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
